Jefferson Garden Flourishes

This fall, 2nd Graders at Jefferson spruced up their school garden in preparation for the winter months. The students helped level out the new soil and added over 100 bulbs which will bloom in spring.
The Jefferson garden was created so that students would have a hands-on learning experience that takes them from seed to flower. At the end of the growing period (mid-May) the students will be able to pick the flowers they’ve nurtured and take them home to share with their families.
Gardening teaches leadership skills and requires team work. As a class team, students weed, water, observe, and journal plant growth. This year, lessons from the school’s Leader In Me “7 Habits” commitment were incorporated into the garden project. By the end of the year, Jefferson 2nd Graders will take the knowledge that they gained from this experience to design their own plant that will benefit their community in our school’s PBL (Project Based Learning) Day.
Our school garden faced one problem this year – the soil had compacted and the bulbs were exposed. Luckily, two community partners: Parkside Commons and St. John’s Lutheran Church; came to the rescue with potting soil. Making the Jefferson Garden a true community experience.
